Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, we are free at last!
old negro spiritual

it’s being reported that the depraved gringo fred salaff has been freed from his 2 1/2 year ordeal. salaff’s website claims he was found innocent, and will seek the return of his belongings and equipment confiscated illegally.
after all this time it’s doubtful the police will be able to round up all his dildoes, plugs, whips, cuffs, and creams. but, gracias a dios, justice has finally been done. now salaff’s free to resume his chosen profession; vile pornographer.
a little background -
salaff, and his devil’s film crew, were in sleepy veracruz, innocently filming the debasement of hot, young women, when disaster struck. police entered his walled and guarded property using a forged search warrant. though salaff had permission from the ministry of government and justice, medical tests for his “actors,” and a license to produce videos in panama, he was arrested, and tossed into the hell-whole, ironically known as la joyaita (the little jewel).
read his website if you want to know more. i mention this story only as a reminder of just how fucked-up the judicial system is in panama. panama is not just about parties, sun and surf. it’s also about petty officials, corruption, and appalling ignorance.
this month the Panamanian government has formally declared war on all gringo tourists. now you don’t need to be a filthy pornographer to end up in jail; just be here legally. you don’t need to be a criminal to have your money confiscated; just speak the truth.
my girlfriend won’t go on record about anything regarding panama. people interviewed on tv don’t want their faces shown. the natives have long ago learned to keep their heads down, and their mouths shut. brave and honest men face grave peril in panama.
in light of this, and recent measures to silence the free press, i am raising the threat alert in panama to high. think twice before coming to paradise.

cojito– this 30 day visa thing has really sent you off the deep end. everything you say about panama (and every other third world country) is true and always has been true. it was true when i was in the philippines in the 70’s, it was true when i was in mexico in the 80’s, it was true when i got here in 2005 and it’s fucking true everywhere in the world. 99% of our fellow so-called “humans” are scum and always have been (read the old testament)even in the “developed” world..where the methods of fucking you over are more “developed”… relax, bro, you know you love panama…get a pensianado visa and go back to the rum and pussy. keynes said it best…in the long run, we’re all dead…might as well enjoy it while we wait for the reaper.
i don’t disagree with anything you say. i’m shocked, angry, confused, sad. i was building a home/life here. and right now i can be arrested, jailed, fined, sued, and deported. it makes me sick just to think about it. i mean, what’s next?
you’re right, i love panama. at least i love the people and country; the government not so much. i expected to be here for many years. but i believe these changes were made to get rid of (or extort money from) people like me.
i don’t have a lot of cash to throw at this problem. sure, i’d love to stay on. i will seek legal advice, and try and do what you say. but it’s very possible i will have to sell out.
even if i stay, i may still sell my flat. i think these changes will push r.e prices down. and i’d rather have my cash gaining interest in a fed insured bank back in the u.s.
i’ll still be able to find a cheap rental down here. that is, if i’m even allowed back into the country.
I personally don’t see what it is about “the people” that all the gringos rave about, here.
The Panas (as a general rule) are rude and they have no manners.
When you say, “Thank you,” … if you’re lucky, they respond with, “Okay.”
Not, “con gusto.” Not, “de nada.” Not even, “Pura Vida, mai.” (Thankfully).
And if you’re not lucky, you’ll just get them ignoring you.
Walk up to a sandwich shop or pizzeria, and the person working there will look at you with a, “What the fuck do you want?” expression on their face.
actually, i’ve only had pleasant experiences with the people i’ve come in contact with. and i’m always taken aback by the kindness shown to me.
just yesterday, a waitress came up to my table and offered to kill the cockroaches in my salad. i didn’t even have to ask. you can bet i left a nice tip.
every night street walkers will offer to do me bareback for an extra $30. they make me feel like royalty. you can bet i leave a nice tip.
then there was the native who warned me about the heater he left spattered across an unflushed casino toilet. you can bet i thanked him for the nice tip.
really, the natives here are so refined and thoughtful. but you were talking about your experiences. the world according to raul. i would suggest there’s a reason you’ve had troubles with the natives. lol - you’re a cunt raul. god, everyone in panama knows that.
try leaving a tip.
keep your real estate in a panamanian corp with nominee directors and bearer shares…keep your money in another country…trust no one with anything more than you can afford to lose…but trust them with something or you will never really know them.
i’ve met the same people raul has met in every country i have ever visited… and i’ve also met some really good ones. when’s the last time anybody in the states acted like they gave a shit when you paid for service? it’s not a national thing, it’s not a class thing; it is the human condition. you find what you look for…
“you ought to write a book on wines, count”, i said.
“mr. barnes”, answered the count, “all i want out of wines is to enjoy them.” ( …the sun also rises)
…the same can be said for women, cigars, rum and third world countries…lighten up amigos…life is short. like i said, you find what you look for.
That’s horseshit, Marco.
There are many national cultures– including America– where people COMMONLY say “please” and “thank you.”
If you buy a gift for your girlfriend in America or in Tokyo, 99 of 100 times, the store clerk will approach you and say, “May I help you?” and after you purchase, they will say, “Thank you.”
In Panama, the percentage is more like 10 of 100 times.
Domo arrigato, Mr. Roboto.
P.S. I’m a big tipper. My tip is so big, I could slap you upside the head with it.
P.P.S. Cojito, my Mother in California just forwarded me an e-mail she got from International Living. They’re still hyping Panama. (I had no idea she was subscribed to their e-mail.) Anyway– You could probably hire a management company to rent out your place by the week.
raul is definately a world traveller…i’ve met him in France, spain, mexico, guatemala and other places i’ve been. he believes everything he reads, i.e. “English is widely spoken,” and then is pissed off that he can’t be understood in some one-stoplight town.
I don’t know how many times I’ve told raul, “it’s people like you who make it hard for people like me.”
I learned French and spanish and everywhere those languages predominate i’ve had nothing but good acceptance from the natives because i’m trying to use their language.
Raul should be very happy in some militia outpost in the mountains of idaho with the other off-the-wall yahoos the states does so well in cultivating.
old salt — thanks for the profile on raul. like the billy joel song says:
“you can never argue with a crazy ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-man…you oughta know by now…”
I doubt you guys have even been to Idaho.
Typical sophmoric debate tactics. You can’t counter the argument (because it’s the truth) so you attack the messenger, with imaginary experiences.
I speak better Spanish than most, y mi esposa es de Bogota. It’s not my fault you guys took it up the culo at the University of Bill and Hillary.
My Spanish may not be perfect, but it was good enough to see a Vaseline poster in La Paz with Old Salt spread eagle on it.
raul-
in 58 years i have been to every state except maine and alaska. europe, mexico, the philippines, nicaragua and panama, guam, viet nam.
i was demonstrating in the streets at the same time that bill was working for the cia at oxford and hillary was humping other chicks at wellesley or wherever she went. i speak english, spanish and french. married twice. 2 grown children. i’m libertarian, agnostic and radically individualistic. i have built and sold 3 companies. in the course of my life i have met a lot of people…many of them angry and cynical like you. you are the one who sounds like an angry sophomore. i stand by my analysis and i repeat: “you find what you look for.”
Grumpy old men on the wrong side of history is apparently what I’ve found.
lol is it me, or is raul starting to sound like Django Durango?
Not you, Cojito.
You’re actually a pretty mellow, laid back-kind of guy.
raul - do you mean that like, “et tu cojito?”
no man, not me. i’m cool. i love ya bro. lol you’re still slated to take over should i slip into a coma.
just beware the ides of march.
raul- let me quote my favorite analytical thinker:
“Typical sophmoric debate tactics. You can’t counter the argument (because it’s the truth) so you attack the messenger…”
may you continue to find what you look for.
Hippie, hippie, hippie.
Peace and love, man.
Smoke a doobie for me, pony-tail.
The revolution came and went, and nobody bothered to tell you.
Iwas in panama for 3 months on business. was constantly harrassed by police and taxi drivers extorting me for money. i was trying to establish a huge money generating program there which would of provided jobs for hundreds of local panamanians. i will take my business elsewhere. Iwas walking home to my hotell after spending an eveining at the royal casino, when stopped by policia and asked for my papers. my spanish was and is very bad. i showed them my birth certificate which at the time was all that is needed to travel in panama. was harrased and they wanted to take me into custody b/c i didnt haver a passport. fortunatley i had enough cash to pay the policia to allow me to return to my hotel.
jps,
check this out! if you want to establish a huge money generating programme, just emulate the one that is already in place and quickly evolving! ..the very one you are describing above! Oh wait, you need automatic weapons and a license to steal before you can do that and all govt hates competition.
as an aside, i too have found that within the last month this place (above conception) has suddenly been crawling with the ‘man’! I swear to you..I am no ‘expert’ on this place and have only been here just less than a year but I’m very sensitive to the ‘presence’ of assholes I’d rather not deal with, and now, they’re out in ‘force’! I could drive around here for a month when I first arrived and rarely ever see the ‘man’ while cruising. now, everytime I leave the domicile, i see the ‘man’ out looking for easy meat. my shitty ass tourist visa expires in 2 days. I’m outta here tomorrow and i’ll watch this burgeoning clusterfuck from the sidelines.
They passed the laws. The way has been paved, i read the legislation. The rebirth of a police state is here for all to enjoy.
bend over, it’ll only hurt when it’s supposed to!
mr. w
mr w, and jps, have to agree with you guys. more and more tourists are complaining of being harassed.
i guess it’s a reaction to the increase in crime. i can’t figure out how hassling gringo tourists makes the streets safer.
but i know i don’t want to live in a police state.
cujo,
I don’t know what to say (impossible you say!!)… but in the final analysis, it’s always the drugs at or near the foundation or source of the crime problem. The marching powder, kookie dust, flake, dragon etc.
I am not pointing the finger at the casual encounter types but the shit ruins people and we’ve probably all seen it.
but is there not enough money in that business for the overlords to have no interest in it? look at the latest news out of afganistan, business is real gooooooood again. how could that be?
i thought the bad guys were at bay… no?
mr w - yeah i read that. all those american troops in afganistan, and the natives are still having a banner year for herion.
as long as there’s a big market for drugs in the 1st world, the 3rd world will find a way to produce them. supply and demand.
all those billions spent on a drug war? it’s a sick joke. prohibition doesn’t work.
yeah, the “shit can run people.” but all kinds of shit can run people - religious fanaticism for example. but we’re not going to outlaw religion anytime soon.
i don’t blame drugs, or alcohol, any more than i blame the diablo rojo when it runs down another pedestrian.
i blame the man, or woman at the wheel.
que paso?,
just figured this out: there’s no place to run unless you run to no place.
shit,
mr w.
be careful out there, wherever you are to all my ‘peeps’
LOL!
mr w.
