panama canal explosion!

panama city panama -

a terrible plume of smoke, water, pre-colombian artifacts, and flying crocodiles briefly obscured the tropical blue skies over the panama canal earlier today.

“we are witnesses to an exceptional and unique act.” said a gleaming president martin torrijos after triggering the 30,000 pound blast.

and with these simple, elegant words martin torrijos reminded us of his people’s deep fascination, and propensity for explosive displays.

jimmy carter

torrijos was joined by ex-u.s. president jimmy Carter (pictured on left), sen robert byrd, and Colombian president alvaro uribe to help celebrate the start of the panama’s multi billion dollar canal expansion project.

a project some fear will advantage the rich and bankrupt the country.

carter, loathed by some for being a hypocritical, limelight-seeking, bible-thumping pussy, is fondly remembered in panama as the man who gave the natives back “their” canal.

“I’m proud of the grand plans for this expansion,” said Carter, wiping bloody croc bits from his guayabera.

don't worry about a bankrupt panama, cojito. the world bank will be right there with financing and bribes to keep another couple decades of corrupt government in power. take a look at "confessions of an economic hit man" to see how it's done. the book even talks a little bit about the "accident" that killed martin's daddy. bulls may come and bulls may go, but the shit goes on forever…

  2. cojito says:

marco – lol to continue your delightful metaphor … i don't mind stepping in a little bullshit – i can always buy rubber boots. i just don't want to end up gored.

no doubt what you say is true. so what incentive does a corrupt gov have for managing the project right?

i still haven't read "confessions." and i want to. do you have a copy lying around your hilltop fortress in panama?

  3. marcopolo says:

the only incentive any government has is to keep up appearances sufficiently so that the population doesn't rebel and replace them with a new generation of opportunist scumbags.

sorry, my copy is in the states.

  4. Golden Boy says:

    Marcopolo,

You don't really believe Perkins bullshit, do you? Do you realize how many people would have to be in on the grand conspiracy to keep it afloat, and yet he's the only brave "truth-teller" to emerge?

  5. fastfreddie says:

    marco,

you've been schooled, a wise man, the only people who involve themselve in the game of politics are lazy, power hungry, sceaming, theives. (I don't recall who it was but someone once described 'democracy' as 6 wolves and 1 sheep voting on what's for supper). Anyone who believes differently is nieve or part of the crooked game.

As Thomas Paine said,"The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." Nothing is what has been done. The criminals who run the governments have set in place crooked "JUDGES" who decide in the manner the criminals who placed them there wish them to. So goes the never ending story.

cojito, my computer has been in the shop for the last little while, I just got it back. sorry to hear about caleb, how's he doing? Hope Alex's cysts are a minor thing quickly and inexpensively cured. Glad to see you're back in action. I'm jumping in with both feet. I've only been to the border towns in Mexico, Tiajuana, Juarez, Sonora. I don't speak spanish except to ask for the bathroom and tell someone I'm hungry,(maybe a few other things most of which would get my ass kicked). Monday, September 10th, I leave Oklahoma for Jinotega, Nicaragua. Wish me luck, and I might be back asking for help in assimilating into central american life.

Maybe we will meet one day in San Jose, on a border run. Que la via bien, amigo.

  7. cojito says:

goldenboy – i haven't read the book yet. what part of it do you disagree with?

fastfreddie – nicaragua? nice. i may visit nicaragua this year. how long is a tourist visa good for? i hear bluefields is cool. what's in jinotega? i mean besides cheap beer and hot nicas?

caleb's better i think. he grabbed his girlfriend's breasts the other day. a sure sign he's on the mend.

yeahdogg- yeah, p-city is getting pricey. lol maybe you should go to jinotega. you can still drink in any casino free here but you need some self control. outside p-city the prices are way cheaper.

it's easy and cheaper to pick up girls in any disco/bar over on Calle Uruguay. hell, i meet flirty girls in coffee shops, supermarkets, and stores. keep your eyes open. if you buy them dinner, drinks, and offer cab fare home you'll get what you need. but yeah, hookers are quicker. try the oasis on veneto. the girls are reasonably priced

can anyone help this poor lad with advice on how to find cheap beer and whores?

  8. marcopolo says:

yeahdogg – i agree with cojito…try la bodeguita on calle uruguay. plenty of girls there waiting to go home with a gringo. the palace (near the executive hotel) is a nice strip club, but i don't know the pricing.

Golden Boy – yes i believe the perkins bullshit. i've studied these things all my life. suit yourself. believe what you want.

  9. fastfreddie says:

cojito, you got it – hot nicas, cheap beer, high speed internet, a nice lake 10 min. from town and the weather according to the internet sites,it is much like Boquet there in Panama (it's in the mountains), but it isn't a rich gringo "lets turn this into a gated peice of america, right here in paradise" kind of place,—yet. Not as dangerous after dark as Managua. nicaliving.com has alot of good info. for those interested in nicaland.
    http://www.nicaliving.com/node/9861

read the comments section for the visa run info. ?$25.00? round trip tica bus, (a 10 minute,{both way} renewal crossing has been repored) So in the time it takes you to get to San Jose from PTY you could make a complete visa run from Managua, for ?$25.00?.

Also health care in nicaland is free, there are some caveat's, but health insurance is cheap and covers the gaps, all-in-all it sounds not to bad.

  10. cojito says:

fastfreddie – excellent link. thank you sir. a couple of friends think i should be living in granada nicaragua.

it's not only cheaper there, but Nicaraguans hold writers and artists in high regard. i think it was daniel ortega who said "in Nicaragua everybody's considered a poet until he proves to the contrary."

lol how does "granada after hours" sound?

  11. fastfreddie says:

A rose by any other name. What? Panama is not a world away, you could always go back. And those who've drank the kool-aid don't care if you're writing about panamania latinas, ticas or nicas, they're hooked.

  12. marcopolo says:

my one trip to granada did not impress me. extremely poor, not a lot to do and see. i was there on business, and, to be fair, i didn't investigate that much. but first impressions of granada were not good.

roads from managua to granad terrible, cattle, dogs, cats, looked like they were starving. no thanks.

  13. Tman says:

have not been to nicaragua…but many friends have and not one has come back saying they would ever return. will probably have to see it once…but i wouldnt get hopes up that its the next great gringo watering hole…unless thats all you want to be doing.

  14. marcopolo says:

i'm going to bueno aires in october. i hear that it is fantastic and inexpensive. i'll let you know. i rented robert duvall's "assasination tago" — great movie and i'm definitely going to visit the tango district!

  15. pete says:

welcome back. i like nicaragua, nicas and granada – but yes, it is a poor country. i disagree about the roads, the main ones are better maintained than in costa rica.

remembering my few days in granada i feel like i went back a step in time. well worth a visit.

never heard a good word about managua though and skipped it except for the airport, which is quite modern.

    good likeness of carter.
