gutter girlsoh crap, sam’s gone off again. over on prima panama he’s hacked-up a posting entitled “immigration stupidity at the border.” it’s his angry reaction to border officials turning away ticket-less tourists.
careful sam. you might just get deported. you know, i used to be like sam. i cared about immigration. i even wrote several impassioned articles about the problem.
but i’m over it. i’ve listened to my readers. and i’ve returned to the gutter where i belong.
now gutter rats love a good rant. hell, we invented the crazy man on the corner bit. but i think this time it’s sam who may be off his nut.
i go through paso canoas every year. and i can tell you, this is old news. yes, it’s crappy tourism policy to “demand an airline ticket out of panama.” but it’s panama’s crappy policy. and they’ve got a lot more where that came from.
come to panama without a return ticket and you might just be turned away. that is, if they even bother to ask. and most days they won’t. the government in panama is a bit twisted. but only a crazy man doesn’t know that.
i always carry a refundable return ticket. i keep it taped to a bottle of abuelo so i won’t forget it. when if i’m allowed in, i just sell it back to the airlines.
i know, it’s silly. but those are the rules. and these are the games we play for the privilege of groveling in panama’s gutter.
if you’re into conspiracy theories, there are several perfectly legitimate reasons panama could have for hassling tourists at the border:
they don’t want perpetual tourists nipping over the border for 72 hours and then returning.
they have a love/hate relationship with gringos and tourists.
they are merely doing the bidding of their masters in the great white north.
ah, who cares? have i mentioned the rum’s killer down here? the crocs are friendly, and the beaches are all sandy and shit. really, it’s well worth a visit.
still, it’s not hard to see why panama’s expensive neighbor to the north kicks serious Panamanian ass. costa rica’s more business savvy than panama. every year tourists swarm costa rica, and trickle into panama.
it’s crazy. i’d pick panama over costa rica every time. Panamanian people are nicer, the women hotter, the infrastructure superior, the country safer, the cost of living cheaper, the rivers, and bays cleaner.
and more importantly, panama has sandra sandoval.
most tourists and expats choose the path of least resistance. if it’s a big hassle, they go somewhere else. whomever is in charge of tourism in costa rica gets that. there are no mixed messages coming out of ticoland.
all one needs is cash.
